I thoroughly enjoyed Margaret Loudon’s A Fatal Footnote, an engaging mystery set against the backdrop of an English duke’s marriage to an American author, the friend of protagonist Penelope Parish. This series centers on Penelope, an American writer in residence in a small English village, and the community surrounding the village bookstore that sponsors her. This well-worn premise in the cozy mystery genre gets fresh treatment by Loudon, who also writes cozy mysteries under pen name Peg Cochran. Indeed, Loudon’s writing skills and attention to plot, characters, and dialogue serve up an entertaining story. She weaves in enough reality (English nobility marrying an American isn’t always well received by the English!) with captivating details about the lavish society wedding weekend at the duke’s estate.Once Penelope begins to investigate the murder by interviewing suspects and following leads, Loudon adds in plot elements showing Penelope juggling work commitments and writing deadlines, dealing with an unexpected visit from her sister who is in distress, and navigating her nascent relationship with the local detective. Oh yes! - Loudon treats us to wondrous food descriptions too. All in all a quick and fun read.A few minor issues that don’t significantly detract from the overall rating. I missed how the title - A Fatal Footnote - fits into anything to do with the story, plot, or characters. I either the missed the reference, or it was too obscure for me to figure out. I had the same confusion when Penelope’s friend Charlotte is referred to once as Caroline Davenport. It’s unclear if that is Charlotte’s pen name, or if Charlotte is a short name of Caroline? Finally, in the last 50-75 pages, I did find it unbelievable and frustrating that Penelope would continually exercise such poor judgment and put herself, repeatedly, in the situations she did. Up to that point Penelope seems to be too smart and savvy to behave that recklessly and carelessly. A Fatal Flaw needed the equivalent of Penelope’s book editor Bettina to catch those issues.
